There are small things we can all do to reduce our carbon footprint and it all starts with little changes to our lifestyle and consumption decisions. Here are 10 ways to get you started.
GO SOLAR
Reduce your carbon footprint by switching over to a renewable energy source like solar. While installing solar panels is a pricey investment upfront, in the long run it will save you money.
REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE
Your purchase decisions can have a large impact on carbon emissions as it creates more demand for new resources to be created. Shop sustainably and look for goods that last. Reuse items where you can (eg. glass bottles, containers, gift wrap etc) and be mindful about recycling.
SUPPORT LOCAL
Transportation of goods comes with a large carbon footprint. Shop at your local farmer’s market or look for locally made products to reduce your carbon footprint while supporting your local community.
EAT LESS MEAT
From land clearing, farming through to processing and transportation, the livestock industry is a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Reduce your carbon footprint by consuming less meat and adding more vegetarian or vegan meals to your diet.
FIND SUSTAINABLE MODES OF TRANSPORT
Cars release many major pollutants into the air and are a key source of greenhouse gas emissions. You can reduce your carbon footprint by using more sustainable modes of transportation where possible – walking, biking, taking public transport or even carpooling.
If you live in a dense city environment, consider not buying a car and instead renting one when you need it. Even better, rent an electric car which produces no carbon emissions.
STOP USING DISPOSABLE PLASTICS
Avoid disposable plastics like shopping bags, straws, cups and utensils. It’s easy things like taking a reusable bag with you for grocery shopping or saying no a straw.
INSULATE WELL
Making sure your home is properly insulated will not only reduce your carbon footprint, you’ll also save on heating costs.
CHOOSE ENERGY-EFFICIENT APPLIANCES
Minimise your energy consumption by choosing energy-efficient appliances for your home. Look for the Energy Rating when purchasing.
USE LESS WATER
Energy is used to pump and heat water, so it’s important to be conscious of the amount of water you’re using and choose water-efficient faucets and appliances.
TRAVEL SUSTAINABLY
Consider eco-friendly options when you’re travelling. While eco-lodges may not be an affordable option for everyone, there are little things you can do to reduce your carbon footprint like reusing your towels and having shorter showers.
